Canzonetta BuxWV 168

This the man that trained JS Bach, which in itself must be a major claim to fame. However, Dieterich Buxtehude was perhaps one of the most important germanic composers of his generation. He was probably born in the southern part of modern day Sweden, but at that time was Danish and then moved to the German province of Holstein, which was also Danish in those days!

Perhaps best known for his organ works, Buxtehude also wrote plenty of other pieces for different forces.

This Canzonetta was originally for organ, but in this arrangement, it is set for the standard SATB quartet. It shows much of the counterpoint skills which were to be the hallmark of JS Bsch’s works although in a far less chromatic form, which reflects the fact that equal temperament would not have been available for a few more years.

Notes

The tempo change form 4 to 3 at bar 30 and back at 60 should keep the overall pace the same, so it is effectively treated as minim = dotted minim.

The descant parts includes 2 bars of introductory ticks followed by 2 more bars to get to you the second entry point on time.
